Amino acids are organic compounds that serve as the fundamental building blocks for proteins. They play essential roles in virtually all cellular functions.
Aminoacids are mainly classified in three categories:
Essential: these aminoacids cannot be synthetised by the animal and must be obtained from the diet f.e lysine, methionine, threonine, tryptophane, valine, isoleucine, ...
Semi essential: some non essential amino acids can only be synthesised from essential amino acids (f.e cysteine and tyrosine)
Non essential: the animal can produce these amino acids on its own.
The essential amino acid that is in shortest supply relative to the animal´s need is referred to as the limiting amino acid. The optimal amount and specific composition of limiting amino acids to include in the diet are primarily determined by the animal’s protein requirements and the type of protein source utilized.
