Dr. François Madec visits PUC - University of Paraná
My visit to PUC was on my agenda in Brazil following an invitation from IMPEXTRACO®. Marcel Joineau and Pedro Machado, both scientists in the company, were with me. We received a warm welcome at PUC, set in a wonderful and charming environment. We met Mrs. Kelly Mazutti and Mr. Leandro Costa, both being professors at the University.
With them and a group of students, we first went to have a look at an experimental facility for pigs. The building is designed and suited to test feeds in weaned piglets and the project represents a joint venture between Impextraco and the University. Undoubtedly this will be a win-win option for the two partners, giving especially a unique opportunity to share knowledge at the cutting edge of science and practical technical aspects, in an educational context.
Then we had a meeting with the students and we started with a presentation about biosecurity in animal production with a focus on pig production. The meaning of biosecurity was given and developed through experiments and field case studies. But the nicest and most exciting moment was probably to come when I had to answer numerous questions coming from the audience. The students took the floor and did not hesitate to ask further explanations about the subject of biosecurity and even about some more technical points such as those related to epidemiology including sensitivity & specificity of laboratory tests (for pathogen detection) as well as reproduction ratio (Ro), an indicator of disease spread.
The relevance of the questions and of the comments I heard all along my visit to PUC show the high level of the education curriculum and they clearly sound like positive signs for the future.
Best wishes !
Dr. François Madec
