Pig, Poultry and Dairy Focus Asia 2012
11/02/2012

From February 8 to February 10, the Pig, Poultry and Dairy Focus Asia 2012 was held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok (Thailand). The conference focused on ‘productivity through health and nutrition’ and hosted over 90 international experts. The four keynote speakers focused on sustainable animal production, improving productivity and performance through genetics, new vaccines and enzymes in animal nutrition in an opening joint session. The main body of the conference was divided into pig, poultry and dairy programs highlighting developments in health and nutrition management and solutions to improve productivity and profitability.

Within this context, Impextraco presented the concept of reducing enteric diseases in poultry by means of water treatment. Poultry production is suffering worldwide from enteric diseases. Feed supplementation with acids is a widespread strategy to reduce the concurrent economic losses. However, pathogenic contamination generally coincides with reduced feed intake – the first and last weeks of the production cycle being the most critical periods for it – due to inflammatory processes. Therefore, water treatment offers a valuable alternative since water consumption is less likely to be reduced in production animals during disease/challenging conditions, moreover water intake is twice as high as feed intake. Providing clean drinking water is of vital importance and acidifying is an excellent manner to manage it. Indeed, applying organic acids to the water causes a reduction in bacterial load due to the acids direct bactericidal effect. Consequently, the drinking water system will be protected from biofilm formation and birds drinking from the water line will be less challenged. It has been shown that sufficient contact time between water and acids is needed in order to obtain the highest efficacy. Furthermore it is crucial to use a well-balanced mixture of acids, rather than pure acids. Indeed, combined acids ensure a broad antimicrobial spectrum in various conditions, without interfering with water quality and intake. Using acidifiers in drinking water ultimately results in improved poultry health and performance. Impextraco’s liquid acidifier, Acidal Ml, has proven – by in vitro as well as in vivo trials – to be a true success story worldwide.

In general, the use of feed additives, as presented during the conference, was related to one of the following concepts:

  • gut health: protection of and improved villi height and crypt depth in order to absorb nutrients more efficiently
  • synergistic action between ingredients
  • reduction of coccidiosis
  • prevention of oxidation processes in the cells
  • enhancement and stimulation of the immune system

Impextraco has been very active for decades now in every single one of these concept!
